Empowering the Next Generation in Ethiopia Through Education
Brighter Generation is a nonprofit organization that provides a virtual and in-person platform for diaspora and global professional volunteers to teach and empower students in Ethiopia, and East Africa. The program provides enrichment courses to disadvantaged high schoolers in all regions of Ethiopia to reach their full potential and address the local challenges in their communities. While teaching the youth essential skills, the platform serves as an international outreach and cultural exchange opportunity for second-generation diaspora and global volunteers.
If you have a passion for mentoring and wish to use your valuable skills to make a difference, please register to become an instructor or an intern. Instructors and college interns, from the comfort of their homes, will gain unforgettable experiences and life-long friendships.

VIRTUAL TEACHING
Brighter Generation has a virtual platform for diaspora professionals and global volunteers to virtually teach high school students, from different regions of Ethiopia, in a classroom. The virtual teaching program aims to empower students by improving English communication, writing, reading, critical thinking, and leadership skills, as well as developing problem-solving skills through impactful community projects. Volunteer instructors receive training, lesson material and teaching guidance throughout the program.
The virtual program was successfully demonstrated as a pilot in summer of 2022 at nine centers in different parts of Ethiopia. In summer of 2023, Brighter Generation expanded the virtual program to more than 30 locations across Ethiopia in order to teach thousands of students. If you are interested in participating, sign up to volunteer and contribute a lasting impact to students in Ethiopia.
IN-PERSON TEACHING
Brighter Generation demonstrated its first in-person pilot program in January 2023; a group of students from MIT traveled to Ethiopia to teach 130 students selected from 15 high schools a crash course on python programming language comprising intensive class lectures, hands-on exercises and final projects that will address the community’s needs.
“We are privileged to be attending our undergraduate studies in the world’s most prestigious University, recently rated as the number one in the US. Having this amazing academic opportunity, we are eager to give our winter break, and precious time to support students in Ethiopia.”
